More Is More:
Expanding your practice through collaboration, diversification, and ingenuity.
The economic downturn has imposed a downward pressure on the remuneration residential architects can claim for their typical menu of services. It will take some time before we can change the current customer mantra of “more for less.” That is, unless architects expand the breadth and depth of the services you offer. With fewer projects available, you must claim more of the opportunities each project entails.
It’s about time you do so. Flush from the boom times and fearful of litigation, architects divested many of the traditional responsibilities of the “master architect,” leaving others to fill the void. Each residential project is now unnecessarily complex and expensive to deliver. Interiors, landscape design, construction services, environmental assessments, and project management are just some of the essential skills that architects have ceded over time, leaving hapless clients to navigate and coordinate these disciplines on their own. The time is right to streamline the process on behalf of clients, and to bring greater value, continuity, and rigor to residential design and construction.
The eighth annual Reinvention Symposium will examine new practice models innovative architects can use to survive these tough times and to position yourselves to thrive in the upturn.

Testimonials
“Thanks to attending the residential architect Reinvention in 2008 in Austin, Texas; my practice has survived the financial downturn. It was at that convention where I heard the advice that "economic downturns are the best time to take on challenges that you might not otherwise have the time to do." Soon after returning from the convention, my partner, Alan Barlis, decided to take on the challenge of designing and finding a developer for a speculatively built passive house. This became known as the Hudson Passive Project. The Hudson Passive Project can be credited for at least fifty percent of our new inquires. It has introduced us to new markets for our services. It has "re-tooled" our operation to cost-effectively produce higher performing designs for all clients. And it has enabled us to do something we can be proud of: making a difference in the effort to reduce the construction industry's impact on our environment.”

“I love seeing the cities and the architecture from around the country. The house tour gives me that opportunity. I also enjoy hearing from other architects and the opportunities and issues they are facing.”
